As the second largest city in California, you can imagine how many hotel choices you have when visiting San Diego. There is a wide range of locations from beachfront to downtown, just as there are room rates catering to almost any budget. Here we've taken a sampling across this arrray and tried to choose some of the better hotels in different categories.
Some of the hotels below have been chosen for location (how close they are to what the typical San Diego visitor wants to see), others value, quality, budget and/or service. In all cases, we've tried to narrow our choices down to a few hotels exceptional in most of the criteria for their price range. Fortunately, there are many great hotels in the city to choose from. These are but a few...
Hotel del Coronado
1500 Orange Avenue, Coronado, CA 92118. Phone: 1-800-HOTELDEL. Built in 1888 on Coronado Island, this is the hotel that all other San Diego area resorts are eventually compared to. Its 680 rooms occupy an amazing location with its 31 acres of beach. Its unique victorian architecture and ambiance are quite unforgettable (you probably seen the del Coronado in more than one movie), and the hotel has been designated a National Historic Landmark. This hotel has beautiful ocean views, large comfortable rooms, good service, historic atmosphere, fine dining, as well as a state-of-the-art spa and fitness center. The downside? It's not cheap, and with rooms averaging about $320 a night, some would say over-priced. Also, the Victorian-era walls can be a bit thin. If money's not an issue, you might want to give the Hotel del Coronado a try.
Omni San Diego Hotel
675 L Street San Diego, California 92101. Phone: (619) 231-6664. If you're looking for a luxury hotel in San Diego, consider this an alternative to the del Coronado. This four-star hotel is a sharp contrast, with its modern design overlooking the both the Bay and the historic Gaslamp Quarter. Its close proximity to the Convention Center makes it great choice for business travelers, but it's also a great place for an escape. The rooms are stylish and relaxing, and feature some terrific amenities. There's a fitness center, and if you like, they'll even send a treadmill up to your room! The staff is very friendly and there are some great restaurants and nightclubs nearby. With its rooms at around $300 a night, it isn't cheap. And While it doesn't have the reputation or beachfront location of the del Coronado, you'll probably feel like you're getting more for your money here.
Old Town Inn
4444 Pacific Highway, San Diego, CA 92110. Phone: (800) 643-3025. On the other end of the rate spectrum, there's this little gem located a short walk from historic Old Town San Diego. It's also just a few miles from SeaWorld and the Zoo. And for about $90 a night you get complimentary continental breakfast, free wireless internet service, Free Satellite Television & HBO, free parking, discount Tickets to SeaWorld and the San Diego Zoo, and children 12 and under stay free. The Inn is also pet friendly. And while you shouldn't be expecting a five-star experience, the rooms are clean and comfortable, and the staff is polite and friendly. Considering this, the value, and its great central location, this is a great hotel for a family looking to see San Diego on a budget.
Hilton Garden Inn
17240 Bernardo Center Drive, Rancho Bernardo, California 92128. Phone:1-877-STAY-HGI. This hotel is located in the upscale community of Rancho Bernardo, about 20 miles north of downtown San Diego. However, this location puts it that much closer to the San Diego Wild Animal Park (located in Escondido). Because the Hilton Garden Inn is not in San Diego proper, you're not paying for location - this place is all about the value. Every room features a microwave, refrigerator, coffee maker, HDTVs, very comfortable beds (king or two queens) and a comfortable sitting area and ottoman. Business travelers will appreciate the work desk and ergonomic Herman Miller chair. There is also complimentary high-speed Internet access. The rooms average about $140 a night, which is not bad at all considering all you get here. If you don't mind the outside of San Diego location, this is definitely one to consider.
